New Delhi: The conduct of the media industry must be above board and the highest standards of ethics must be maintained by newspapers at all times, said president Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on Thursday. The president was speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), a grouping of newspaper publishers in the country.

President Mukherjee said the newspaper industry must check paid news and resist the temptation to “dumb down" news. Placing the onus of regulation on INS, he said: “It is incumbent upon you as a society of newspapers and periodicals to weed out such aberrations as might have crept into the functioning of the media."

Newspapers have played a crucial role in educating Indians and giving expression to the diversity of views in the society, “upholding thereby the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression" he said, addressing a gathering of newspaper publishers at Vigyan Bhawan.

The president also honoured seven founder members of the INS including The Bombay Chronicle, The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Pioneer, The Statesman, The Times of India and The Tribune.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravindra Kumar, president of the INS highlighted the problems facing the publishing industry. He referred to the recent Supreme Court order that upheld the new wageboard for employees of the newspaper industry. He said the wageboard recommendations were divorced from the reality of the newspapers’ capacity to earn. He enlisted other challenges facing the industry including rising cost of production.
