Kochi: Marine exports from India rose 10% in 2008-09 because of an increase in production and rise in demand from China.

India exported 6.02 lakh tonnes of seafood last year, showing an increase of 11.29 per cent in quantity and 12.95 per cent in earnings, Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA) Chairperson Leena Nair told reporters.

China emerged as the second largest market, contributing 15% to the total export of Rs8607.94 crore, with the US a close second at 12%.

Exports to the US have shown a slight increase in quantity and rupee value, even though in quantity terms they fell 10.8% to $227.29 million, she said.

The European Union remained the largest market for Indian seafood accounting for 1,51,590 tonnes.

The increase in exports is largely attributed to rise in catch on the west coast because of steps taken by the MPEDA.

The chairperson said the MPEDA the increase in exports is largely because of increase in catch. Steps like GIS mapping in farm census and traceability would go a long way in increasing production, she said.
