Coimbatore: The University Grants Commission (UGC) is in the process of formalising a plan to give a fillip to the higher education sector in the country, its chairman, Sukhdeao Thorat has said.
The plan would be finalised after holding talks with the Prime Minister and the officials at the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Thorat said after delivering the convocation address at the Avinashilingam University for Women.
The Government would soon annuounce a scheme to encourage the SC/ST students to pursue higher education, since there were disparities in education between social, regional and gender groups, he said.
Saying that only 10% of the youth in the age group of 18-23 have access to higher education in the country, Thorat said that India lagged behind in the sector compared to the international average of 23%.
UGC has planned to increase the enrollment ratio from 10-15% by 11th Five Year Plan period, he said, adding that plans are afoot for inclusive education and make higher education easily accessible to all sections.
In order to discuss reforms in higher education, UGC is organising a two-day National conference in Delhi on 9 October, before which the views of all the vice-chancellors would be heard during the scheduled regional conferences from 11-20 Sept, Thorat said.
