New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) has registered 18 million new voters in the last one year and India now has a total of 850 million electors, according to the poll watchdog.

“1.8 crore, or 18 million new voters, were registered as of 1 January this year. 85 crores is the total voter population right now," chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi said while addressing an event organized to mark the National Voters’ Day on Monday.

Zaidi said that registration of first-time voters in the age group of 18-19 years has been a key focus of the Commission. “More than 50% of the total voter group between 18-19 years is now enrolled as opposed to 10-15% earlier," Zaidi said.

President Pranab Mukherjee was present at the event, where several best practices in election management across the country were awarded. Mukherjee appreciated the work of civil servants who carry out duties during national and state elections.

This was the sixth year of the National Voters’ Day, whose theme was Inclusive and Qualitative Participation. The focus was on registering all eligible citizens as voters.
