SC asks Centre to clarify on Uttarakhand power plants
Centre had said it needs 6 more months and an evaluation by another expert body to consider what to do about the hydropower projects
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the central government to clarify its stand in relation to several stalled power projects in Uttarakhand.
The government had said on Tuesday it would require six more months and an evaluation by another expert body to consider what to do about hydropower projects in the Alaknanda-Bhagirathi basin.
The Uttarakhand government opposed the centre’s move to appoint another committee saying eight committees had already evaluated the projects, a bench of justices Dipak Misra and U.U. Lalit said the federal government’s stand was still not clear and they would have to file another affidavit to clarify.
The court also said it was only dealing with 24 power projects, on which the apex court had ruled in 2013. In 2013, the court had sought to analyse what the contribution of hydropower plants was towards environmental degradation in light of the floods which had then occurred.
