India to have Bar Exam: SC
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the All India Bar Examination to be held by the Bar Council of India (BCI) for the first time later this year. The court’s move strengthens the BCI’s position in its quest to reform the legal profession.
Anoop Awasthi, a law student at Delhi University, along with two others, challenged BCI’s exam on various grounds. Awasthi, who appeared for himself before the court, told the Chief Justice’s bench that his main concern was the five to six month interval that falls between his date of graduation and the bar exam. Law graduates will not be allowed to practice until they clear the bar exam, according to the 12 June notification the BCI issued.
