SC to hear last-minute plea to stay Yakub Memon hanging
President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his fresh mercy petition on Wednesday night after Supreme Court had earlier in the day cleared all legal hurdles
New Delhi:A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear a last-ditch petition at 2.30am on Thursday seeking a stay on the hanging of Yakub Memon scheduled in another five hours.
The bench comprising justices Dipak Misra, Prafulla Pant and Amitava Roy, which had upheld the death warrant against the 1993 Bombay blasts convict, will hear the petition at the Supreme Court.
In the fresh plea, lawyers for Memon are likely to argue that the person facing the gallows should be given at least 14 days time after the rejection of his mercy petition as the apex court’s guidelines.
Earlier on Wednesday night, President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his fresh mercy petition on advice of government, after the Supreme Court had earlier in the day cleared all legal hurdles.
Memon’s hanging is scheduled for 7am in Nagpur central prison on his 53rd birthday as per the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court’s order even as prison sources said preparations were completed to carry out the execution amid tight security.
