Former telecom minister A. Raja was the top gainer in July in terms of citations in Indian and the global media, mainly on account of fresh developments in the investigation of the 2G telecom scam. Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee held the top position in the newsmakers list for both Indian and global media, despite losing some ground. Former Securities and Exchange Board of India chief C.B. Bhave and former State Bank of India chairman O.P. Bhatt saw their coverage decline the most.

The Mint Influencers Index is a monthly objective measure based on media analysis by Dow Jones Insight, which tracks these leaders, looking at the volume of media citings for each of them as a proxy for their rising or waning influence. The assumption is that visibility and share of voice is good for them and their companies. In the case of global media, the index is collectively a surrogate for the growing or waning interest in India.
