People in Islamic countries and non-Islamic ones believe that relations between the Muslim world and the West can be improved through better interaction between the two. If that isn’t happening, the problem lies with the West, say people in Islamic countries. Expectedly, people in non-Islamic countries say the problem lies with the Muslim world.

These are among the key findings of a report titled ‘Islam and the West: Annual Report on the State of Dialogue’, which was released by the World Economic Forum on Monday.

The report, launched in collaboration with Georgetown University, is the first to study how Muslim and Western societies see each other. It features a Gallup Muslim-West Dialogue Index, a measure of the degree of optimism of citizens of various countries on the state of the relationship between the West and Islam. The index is on a scale of 100, where 100 indicates the highest optimism. It also presents an analysis of the way the Muslim world and the West are portrayed in countries, both Islamic and non-Islamic.

Among the significant findings of the report is the fact that people in most European countries see greater interaction with the Muslim world as a threat (people in the US do not).

The report, the first of its kind, does not cover India.
