New Delhi: The government has given initial approval to 10 applicants who have sought permission to set up mega food parks in different parts of the country out of 40-odd applications received by the Food Processing Ministry.

“We had received about 40 applications from companies which were interested in establishing the food parks. We have given initial approval to 10 applicants," Food Processing secretary Ashok Sinha told PTI on the sidelines of a function here today organised by industry body Assocham.

The government had invited proposals to set up 10 mega food parks in the initial stage, out of its target to build 30 such parks during the 11th Plan period (2007-12).

“Those selected will be given the grant in phases according to their course of action," Sinha said.

The companies, which have evinced interest, have formed special purpose vehicles to set up such parks, he added.

The government will provide grant-in-aid of a maximum of Rs50 crore towards project cost and Rs2.5 crore towards project management fees for the setting up of each such park.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had, in September 2008, approved the implementaion of the scheme to establish mega food parks.

The scheme provides for modern infrastructure for ensuring value-addition to farm commodities as well as meat, dairy, poultry and fishery products.
