Mumbai: The Shipping directorate has relaxed norms for maritime intstitutes. They would now have to enter into only a tie-up with shipping companies for on-the-job training of students. Earlier, they had to sign a memorandum of understanding.
The Director General of Shipping, which earlier insisted on an MoU, has now relaxed the rules after representations from 120 maritime institutes in Chennai, which had dubbed the DG circular as “draconian”. At present, 18,000 students, who have already undergone the four-year theoretical course, have not been able to find jobs as they could not complete six months of on-the-job training, mandatory to get “Certificates of Competence”.
