New Delhi: Major ports in the country worked at 91.89% of their capacity while minor ports utilized nearly 81.27% of their installed capacity during the previous fiscal, Lok Sabha was informed on 29 August.

Shipping Minister T R Baalu said in a written reply that of the total installed capacity of 504.75 million tonnes, major ports handled 463.84 million tonnes of traffic during 2006-07, translating into 91.89% capacity utilization.

He said it was not correct to say ports were in a dilapidated condition as capacity utilization was at reasonable levels.

Apart from major ports, there are a large number of minor ports under various state governments with a cumulative installed capacity of 228.3 million tonnes.

“The actual traffic handled by non-major ports during the previous fiscal stood at 185.54 million tonnes, which gives a percentage utilization of 81.27%," Baalu said.
