NCRB data: UP, West Bengal record highest number of crime against women
According to NCRB data, the overall number of crimes recorded against women at the national level has decreased from 3.3 lakh in 2014 to 3.2 lakh in 2015
New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra recorded the highest number of crimes against women among Indian states in 2015, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released on Tuesday.
With 35,527 cases reported in UP in 2015, the state’s share is 10.9% of the total number of such crimes in India, while West Bengal at 33,218, contributes 10.1% and Maharashtra at 31,126 constitutes 9.5% of the total crimes against women in the country.
Among Union territories, at 17,104, Delhi leads the number of crimes reported against women, followed by Chandigarh at 463.
The overall number of crimes recorded against women at the national level has decreased from 3.3 lakh in 2014 to 3.2 lakh in 2015. There was a sharp rise in reported crimes against women between 2012 and 2013, as a result of increased awareness following the December 2012 gang-rape case, but the increase was sharply lower between 2013 and 2014—3.09 lakh cases of crime against women were reported in 2013.
