New Delhi:

Legislators of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday met Delhi’s lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung to repeat the party’s request to dissolve the legislative assembly and pave way for elections in the state. The legislators were led by Arvind Kejriwal, who stepped down as Delhi’s chief minister on 14 February.

The party also took up the matter of alleged horse-trading by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form a government, but was told by Jung that this lay beyond his jurisdiction, senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia told reporters after the meeting at the lieutenant governor’s Civil Lines residence.

“The lieutenant governor said that he will take into account the full situation and, after due consultations with others, send in a detailed report to the President of India for his consideration," a release by the LG’s (lieutenant governor’s) office said.

Soon after the meeting, Kejriwal tweeted: “Met LG. Had good discussions. He will now invite BJP for discussions. If BJP claims they can form govt, LG will ask them to show nos (numbers)."

The AAP has repeatedly accused the BJP of trying to form a government with the support of legislators from rival parties. Senior BJP leaders have denied the charge. Sisodia said the lieutenant governor conveyed to his party members that he would “consult other parties and take a swift decision".

“All MLAs (members of legislative assembly) of the AAP met the LG and we briefed him that there have been attempts at buying out and threatening our MLAs," said Sisodia. The legislators informed the lieutenant governor that there was no possibility of government formation now, he added.

Delhi has been in suspended animation under the lieutenant governor’s administration since 14 February when the Kejriwal-led AAP quit the government. Earlier this month, the party had also met President Pranab Mukherjee to demand immediate dissolution of the legislative assembly.
