New Delhi: It makes good economic and business sense to invest in agriculture. According to the latest report from the World Bank, agriculture is essential for pulling people out of poverty. An estimated 900 million people, primarily engaged in agriculture, live on less than $1 a day.

Countries have known that greater investment in agriculture can improve lives of their people, yet investment in the industry has been grossly neglected over the past 20 years. More than 75% of the world’s poor live in the countryside, where agriculture is the primary vocation but only 4% of official development aid goes to agriculture in developing countries.

The Bank’s report says the need for action is especially acute in sub-Saharan Africa where investment has been spotty and the demand for food expected to double from 2000 to 2015. By providing small farmers in Africa with proper support tools, the Bank anticipates that local cultivators will be able to feed the hungry while simultaneously benefitting from economic success.
