Srinagar: As Jammu and Kashmir headed for a hung assembly, the National Conference on Sunday said it would prefer to have an alliance with the Congress.

“Personally, I will prefer to have an alliance with the Congress," NC president Omar Abdullah said when asked whom his party would like to see as a coalition partner in the future government.

Whereas the Congress on Sunday said it will not take the intiative to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir if it does not emerge as the single largest party in the 87-member Assembly.

“If we do not emerge as the single-largest party, we will not take the initiative to form the government," AICC general secretary Prithviraj Chavan told media in New Delhi.

Ruling out any possibility of having a tie-up with BJP, Omar said his party would prefer to sit in the opposition rather than forming a government with the saffron party.

The NC would try to get the support of the independent MLAs first before mulling other options, Abdullah said.

Chavan said the Congress high command will take stock of the situation and some senior leaders of the party would go to the state on Monday to discuss the next course of action with the party legislators.

However, Congress sources said the party would like to go with one of the two regional parties National Conference and PDP and take help of independents to form the next government.
