New Delhi: Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said that the governmant, the world’s second biggest producer of sugar after Brazil, may allow exports of the sweetener on a monthly basis.

The government, worried about domestic price rises, keeps a tight control over sugar exports and has so far allowed only 1.5 million tonnes of unrestricted overseas sales this year, despite big stocks and the prospect of a good 2011/12 cane crop.
“Too much of sugar in the international market affects prices,” Pawar said at the Economic Editors’ Conference.
