Raipur: The Raman Singh-led government comfortably defeated the no-confidence motion moved by the main opposition Congress in the Chhattisgarh assembly by 13 votes.

The voting took place at around 2am after Chief Minister Raman Singh termed as ‘baseless’ the Opposition’s charges of corruption against his government. The Chief Minister’s reply in the Legislative Assembly lasted for nearly one-and-half hour.

As the motion was put to vote by Speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal, Leader of Opposition T S Singhdeo demanded division following which the Speaker announced voting in reference to the motion.

As many as 50 members voted against the motion while 37 in favour. In the 90-member House, BJP has 49 members, Congress 39, BSP one and an independent. Besides, there is one nominated member of the state assembly.

Forty eight MLAs of BJP, one nominated member and a BSP MLA voted against the motion while 37 Congress MLAs voted in favour. The independent member did not participate in the voting while two Congress members were absent.

Earlier speaking in favour of motion, Singhdeo said the state government cheated people by not fulfilling the poll promises and committing financial scam. “The BJP government had promised to procure every single grain of the farmers. They had assured to hike the support price on paddy to 2,100 per quintal. None of the promises have been fulfilled till date," Singhdeo said.

Hitting out at the government for outsourcing school teachers, he said it is shameful that government doesn’t have able and qualified teachers to impart education to students. “Outsourcing of school teachers will have consequences on the job opportunity of local youths," he added.

“The scenario of secondary education is pathetic in “The scenario of secondary education is pathetic in the state as Chhattisgarh has been ranked 34th in secondary education in the nation. “On the other hand, large numbers of schools are being shut down in the name of rationalisation," he said.

He also attacked the BJP government over scam in Civil Supply department and questioned whether the ACB probe into it was complete and fair. “People have lost confidence in the government after this scam was unearthed," he said. Singhdeo also took on the ruling BJP over number of issue related to forest, health and mining.

In his reply, the Chief Minister said it was the confidence of the people in his government that they stormed to power for the third straight time. He also termed as a “bunch of lies" the Congress’s charge sheet which is part of no-confidence motion. “My government is continuously working for the development of the people of the state with their faith in us. In the greed of power, the Opposition is trying to level false and baseless charges on my government," he said. “I have never seen any opposition degrading their moral values to such extent to target the ruling government," the CM added.

Listing out various schemes of his government, Singh said his administration was providing ration to 60 lakh BPL families under the Food Security Act. “The opposition’s no-trust motion would be an injustice to these BPL families. Chhattisgarh is the first state to provide un-interrupted power supply to its people.

“With the investment of 22,000 crore, in generation, distribution and transmission of power, the government has set up 95,000 LT line and providing electricity to thousands of consumers," he said. Singh further said that his government’s vision and policy regarding corruption was very clear.

“Stringent action will be continued against corruption. In civil supply corporation case, charge sheet was filed just in three months. ACB took instant and effective steps in the case," he said.

After discussion and voting on no trust motion, the Speaker transacted other business of the House and adjourned the assembly sine die.
