BJP assails Liberhan report in Parliament
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attacked the Liberhan Commission report on the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid as a document “meticulously planned" to target some individuals, parties and organizations.
BJP chief Rajnath Singh led the party’s assault on the report, saying it was a “biased political document". The report has indicted the party’s senior leaders including L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Singh reiterated that his party was committed to building a Ram temple in Ayodhya.
While Singh sought to establish the historic context of the disputed structure in Ayodhya, home minister P. Chidambaram intervened to say that “we are not here to debate a title suit. It is sub judice and cannot be debated in this House." Chidambaram is expected to reply to the two-day debate at its conclusion on Tuesday.
Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and Union minister Salman Khursheed also spoke on the report on Monday.
The government was forced to table the report in Parliament after excerpts of the report appeared in the media in November.
