New Delhi: Parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Meghalaya saw vigorous rainfall, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. But they failed to pick up in Punjab, west Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch and Rayalaseema.
India’s state governments have declared drought in a total of 167 districts because of scanty monsoon rainfall this year, the agriculture ministry said.
Uttar Pradesh, a top sugar and rice producer, has declared drought in 58 districts and Bihar, a rice and maize grower, has named 26 districts as drought-hit, the agriculture ministry said on its website.
