New Delhi: Six months before elections in three north-eastern states, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged its alliance partners to ensure that all eight states in the region are governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). These states are expected to see a direct contest between the NDA and the Congress.

At a meeting of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the north-east wing of the NDA, BJP president Amit Shah expressed the hope that in the future, all eight chief ministers of north-eastern states would be from the NDA.

“Out of the eight states in the North-east, NEDA is in power in five states. I am confident that in the days to come, NEDA would be able to form governments in all the eight states of the North-east. NEDA is not just a political alliance but it is an attempt to bring together all the different cultures and traditions of North-east on one common platform. It is an attempt to end the problems of the North-east," Shah said during the NEDA meeting in Delhi on Tuesday.

The meeting between north-east-based political parties and the BJP was the second such conclave and is significant because assembly elections are due in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland in March 2018. Mizoram will go for elections in December 2018.

Currently, NEDA is in power in five of the eight states, out of which BJP is in power in three states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. NEDA is in power in Sikkim and Nagaland. Senior leaders of the BJP are hopeful that the rise of its alliance in the North-east would continue in the assembly polls in Tripura and Meghalaya.

“It is the first priority of the BJP-led NDA that development takes places in the North-east while maintaining the cultural and traditional values of different communities in the North-east. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants North-east to developed, and free of corruption while maintaining its cultural ethos," Shah said at the conclave.

The BJP leadership is keen that NDA performs well in north-east states in the 2019 general elections. The eight states collectively have 25 Lok Sabha seats.

“The Congress has been in power for most of the years of independent India but BJP has done more work in the states of North-east than Congress party. In an effort to speed up the development work in the state, at least one Union minister visits a north-east state every 15 days," Shah added.

Safe borders and inclusive development were among issues discussed at the day-long meeting. The convener of NEDA is Himanta Biswa Sarma, a senior minister in the BJP government in Assam. Sarma has been instrumental in the expansion of both BJP and NEDA in North-east.
