New Delhi: The Centre is unlikely to introduce a health cess in the coming Union budget to provide health coverage to families below the poverty line (BPL), despite pressure from some political quarters within the United Progressive Alliance goverment.
Union chemical and fertilizers minister Ram Vilas Paswan has proposed a 2% health cess under the new drug policy to provide medical support to over 22 crore BPL people. Finance minister P. Chidambaram is not in favour of a health cess and may rather prefer to increase budgetary support for the health sector in view of the buoyancy in the revenue collections, official sources said.
The government has also asked the health ministry to utilize the available sources in an efficient manner.
