Legal | Case of high sales tax on Nycil in Supreme Court
New Delhi: Heinz India Ltd has moved the Supreme Court against the Kerala government’s decision to impose a high sales tax rate on the firm’s medicated prickly heat powder Nycil.
A bench headed by justice S.B. Sinha has issued notice to the state government asking it to explain why Heinz should pay sales tax of 20% on Nycil against 8% charged for medicines and drugs.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition of Allied Blenders and Distillers Pvt. Ltd (ABD), which sells its whisky under Officer’s Choice brand, seeking to stop a rival firm from using ‘Original Choice’ label.
A bench headed by justice S.B. Sinha, while dismissing the plea, upheld the Delhi high court ruling that allowed Karnataka-based Paul P. John to sell India-made foreign liquor under Original Choice label.
