DMK suspends Alagiri from party
Alagiri has been suspended for a short time as disciplinary action for providing strong opinions against the DMK
Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party on Friday announced that it has suspended M.K. Alagiri, former Union minister and elder son of party chief M. Karunanidhi.
“As disciplinary action for providing strong opinions against the party leading to a confusion within the party, as it will cause further disruption, Alagiri has been suspended for a short time," it said in a statement.
On 5 January, DMK disbanded its Madurai unit headed by Alagiri, stating that it was not maintaining discipline and disobeying the orders of Karunanidhi.
Two weeks ago, Karunanidhi had warned Alagiri of expulsion if he did not toe the DMK party line on political alliances.
“Anybody who gives unnecessary opinions which differ from the party’s stand and whoever it may be will be dealt severely and can also be expelled from the party," Karunanidhi had said in the statement.
“Earlier as party’s chief, I had mentioned that the DMK will be happy to form an alliance with Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK)," he said.
Alliance with other political parties are decisions that can only be taken by the DMK working committee, the statement said.
