SANTIAGO, Chile : Three cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Easter Island, but authorities said there was little threat of the disease spreading.“The three affected people are adult islanders who are under treatment recovering well," Deputy Health Minister Lydia Amarales told Radio Cooperativa of Santiago on 11 February.
She said two other suspected cases are being watched.She said sanitary measures, including fumigation, were ordered in the isolated island 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) west of Chile’s central coast in the Pacific Ocean.
Dengue fever, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, causes joint pains, high fever, nausea and a rash. In severe cases, it causes internal bleeding and may lead to death.According to the World Health Organization, at least two-fifths of the world’s population is at risk of dengue and thousands die of the illness each year.
