New Delhi: The Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana on Thursday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Maharashtra for the manner in which it won the trust vote.

In an editorial titled He Kasle Bahumat (‘What majority is this’ in Marathi), the party condemned Wednesday’s voice vote, which it alleged was “conducted in haste and violated rules, regulations and parliamentary traditions."

It clarified that the party had no issues with the election of the Speaker (which it supported), but only with the Speaker’s controversial refusal to grant a division of votes that is mandated by Rule 23—a demand the opposition, including the Congress, made.

Unlike a voice vote, which is taken by a collective ‘yea’ or ‘nay’, a division vote is where members of an Assembly are told either to stand up and signal their position, or stand in two groups—those supporting and those opposing a motion. The rest are taken to be abstainers.

“The government promised a people’s government and clean governance, but the way the floor test was managed, these promises seem hollow," the editorial said.

“How can a party which wins the trust vote by clearly violating rules, win over the trust of the people?" it said, adding: “What kind of a majority is this? It is not just we who don’t believe this majority, but the people of India won’t be ready to accept this."

It also warned the BJP that while it had managed to win the trust vote for the moment, in the people’s view, the government’s trust will only decline from now on.
