New Delhi: India’s vital monsoon rains were 16% above normal in the week to 4 August, the second highest in the current season, the weather office said on Thursday.
At 38% above normal, the June-September rains were the highest in the week to 29 July.
Sources at the weather office had earlier told Reuters monsoon rains in the past week were at least a fifth higher than normal.
The weather office also said the rainfall in the 1 June to 2 August period was 2 % below normal.
An official at the weather office said monsoon rains were excess-to-normal in the rice and soybean growing areas of northwest and central India in the past week.
