Former Arunachal CM Kalikho Pul allegedly commits suicide

Former Arunachal Pradesh CM Kalikho Pul allegedly hangs himself from the ceiling fan in his bedroom at the chief minister's official residence which he was yet to vacate

New Delhi: Former chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh and veteran Congress leader, Kalhiko Pul was found dead at his residence on Tuesday morning in Itanagar.

According to a news report by Press Trust of India (PTI), Pul allegedly committed suicide and hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his bedroom, at the chief minister’s official residence which he was yet to vacate. The circumstances under which he died is yet to be clear.

Pul, who broke away from the Congress party earlier this year, had led a minority government in the North East state after getting support from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He eventually joined back the Congress party last month when chief minister Pema Khandu took over.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has issued a statement expressing shock at the untimely and tragic demise of Pul and has extended condolences to the family.

“Shocked and deeply saddened at the untimely demise of Kalikho Pulji. My heart goes out to his family & loved ones," Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said on Twitter.

Central minister of state for the ministry of development of north eastern region, Jitendra Singh told reporters in Delhi, “Our heart goes out to the family and to the people of the north-east."

Pul, the eighth chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, was born on 20 July 1969 and belonged to a small village, Hallaw from Anjaw district in the state. Known to be dedicated in his studies, he did his graduation in humanities from Indira Gandhi Government College at Tezu in Lohit district.

Starting his political career as a ground level leader, Pul represented the Hayuliang assembly constituency and was first elected in 1995. He has been a five-time MLA and served as state minister for several portfolios including finance and power. He owns the distinction of being the longest-serving finance minister of the state.

Known to be a strong organizational man, Pul’s party colleague remember him as having a keen eye for political strategies and campaign planning. He has served as both the executive member of Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee and a member of party’s election committee.
