Special court to pronounce sentence in RSPL conviction on Wednesday
A special CBI court convicts RSPL managing director Pradeep Rathi, CEO Udit Rathi and assistant general manager Kushal Aggarwal in Kesla coal scam case
New Delhi: A Delhi court will pronounce a sentence on three top officials of Delhi-based Rathi Steel and Power Ltd (RSPL) in a coal scam case on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the court found RSPL and its officials—managing director Pradeep Rathi, chief executive Udit Rathi and additional general manager Kushal Aggarwal guilty of criminal conspiracy and cheating.
Special court judge Bharat Parashar sent the three officials to judicial custody.
The case relates to the allocation of Chhattisgarh’s Kesla North coal block to RSPL, in which certain irregularities were allegedly found.
Senior public prosecutor V.K. Singh, appearing for the Central Bureau of Investigation, sought the maximum sentence for the convicted trio, arguing that they had attempted to influence the court during the trial.
Counsel for the Rathis and Aggarwal requested the court to be lenient with the sentence as the individuals did not have prior convictions and had been fully cooperative with the trial. The lawyers said that they would be appealing the order of the special court.
