Monsoon rains across the country were 18% below their weekly normal. Though overall July rainfall was near its 50-year average, it failed to make up for June’s staggering 46% deficit.

The monsoon’s overall deficit is now 19%. Buoyed by good rains in central India and the Deccan plateau, water storage levels in India’s key reservoirs saw their best weekly gain since the monsoon began in June. The reservoirs mentioned below, which constitute nearly 33% of the country’s water storage, were nearly 80% of their weekly normal and 81% of their 10 year average. This could boost hydropower and irrigation prospects as large swathes of India’s north-west continue to face drought-like conditions.
