Food prices steady even as truckers’ strike continues

New Delhi: Prices of food items, including coarse cereals, vegetables and fruits, are reported to have remained steady in the wholesale market across the country even as the truckers’ strike entered its third day, on Wednesday.

According to the data published on the Agmarknet.nic website, maintained by the agriculture ministry, prices of most food articles were ruling steady, showing no impact of the strike on prices.

The Centre, however, was adamant that it would not yield to their demands, even as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh appeared set to declaring the stir illegal. The Uttar Pradesh government directed all district magistrates and the police to initiate action against those disrupting public services.

Failing to break ground with the government, the agitating truckers are turning to political parties for support.

Prices of food items, including vegetables, coarse cereals and fruits are reported to have remained steady in the wholesale market across the country. However, key spot markets for commodities such as sugar, potato and maize were closed as strike crippled supplies, leading to a rise in prices

Prices of most varieties of wheat and rice were unchanged, except jowar and basmati rice that ruled lower by at least 28% at Rs900 per quintal and Rs3,000 per quintal from the previous day level. A similar trend was seen in the prices of fruits and vegetables.
