New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Central government to formulate a national drug action plan within six months to deal with drug abuse among minors.

A bench comprising chief justice of India T.S. Thakur and justice D.Y. Chandrachud also directed the Centre to conduct a national survey within four months to study drug and alcohol abuse among those under 18 years of age.

The court also suggested introducing issues related to drug addiction in curriculum for school children to improve awareness.

The court’s directions came in a 2014 public interest litigation filed by non-profit Bachpan Bachao Andolan. The petition had sought directions to formulate a national action plan for children on drugs and substance abuse including all issues of identification, investigation, recovery, counselling and rehabilitation. It also asked for setting up of rehabilitation and de-addiction centres in each district of the country with a special wing for children.

A copy of the court’s order is not yet made available.
