Chennai: Ahead of the RK Nagar by-election, the income-tax department officials began raids at health minister C. Vijayabaskar’s residence and other properties in Chennai, Trichy and Pudukkottai on Friday morning.
According to the Tamil News channel, PuthiyaThalamurai, more than 30 properties belonging to the minster and his relatives are being raided across the three districts in the state.
Tax department officials have also begun their searches at actor-turned-politician R. Sarathkumar’s residence in Chennai. This comes a day after he extended his support to AIADMK (Amma) candidate T.T.V. Dinakaran for the RK Nagar bypolls.
An I-T official confirmed the raids in Chennai, but did not want to be named.
The AIADMK is split into AIADMK (Amma) under V.K. Sasikala and AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) under O. Panneerselvam. An MLA from Viralimalai constituency, Vijayabaskar, is from Sasikala’s faction of AIADMK.
In the last few days, there have been several complaints of widespread cash and gift distribution in the RK Nagar constituency that will go to polls on 12 April. More than 40 arrests have been made and nearly Rs15 lakh seized in the last one week, according to the EC.
