Banerjee took the charge from outgoing AEC chairman Anil Kakodkar at Anushakti Bhavan in south Mumbai.
The 63-year-old Banerjee joined Barc in 1967 as an officer of 11th batch of prestigious Barc Training School and went on to become its director in April 2004.
The veteran scientist did his B.Tech and PhD from IIT-Kharagpur and has made outstanding contributions in many materials-related areas in both basic and applied sectors.
