Kolkata: Death toll in the fire at a market in Kolkata’s Sealdah neighbourhood has risen to 19, according to government officials.
Fire broke in the Surya Sen Street market early on Wednesday. Around 25 fire trucks were deployed to douse the fire.
Emergency officials said death toll could rise further as many of those rescued were in critical condition and sent to nearby hospitals.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced a compensation of Rs.2 lakh for those killed and Rs.50,000 for those injured in the accident.
Police said the fire was detected at 3.50 am. The cause of fire and the extent of damage are still under investigation, they said, adding that a search is on to find out if anyone is trapped inside the godown-cum-office complex.
