House panel recommends NJC for judges appointments
New Delhi: A parliamentary panel has recommended a national judicial commission for appointment of judges and to make the process more “ rational, transparent and accountable".
Parliament standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice that tabled its report on Thursday also backed the government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of the high court judges from 62 to 65, which is at part with their counterparts in the Supreme Court.
“There is an urgent need on the part of the government to review the procedure for appointment of the judges in the higher judiciary and also to put in place some mechanism so as to optimize the output in their performance" the report said.
The report said the national judicial commission could have representatives from the judiciary, executive, Bar and the Parliament.
