New Delhi: Some 12% employees in Indian workplaces say they were discriminated against on account of HIV, according a new International Labour Organization report on equality at work, released on Thursday.

The report says women faced more discrimination (76%) than men (68%) even though 90% of them in the sample had been infected by their husbands.

Asian women also faced discrimination in terms of employment opportunities and wage differences. In East Asia and the Pacific, the female share of non-agricultural paid employment increased to 43.5%, whereas in South Asia, the rate remains at 16.5%.

Discrimination is seen more in unorganized sectors, and professional companies cannot afford to discriminate, say human resource managers. “I don’t think any professionally-run organization discriminates its employees or can afford to," says Prabeer Jha, senior vice-president, human resources, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. Some say gender discrimination is declining, at least in the organized sector. “The glass ceiling is actually disappearing in today’s workplace as women more than ever enter the workforce and take up top positions," says Shiv Agrawal, CEO, ABC Consultants.
