The ruling National Democratic Alliance government has pursued an aggressive drive against black money since it came to power in May 2014.
Besides demonetising high-value banknotes as part of the effort, the government has taken a number of steps to curb black money, including stepping up search-and-survey operations to unearth concealed wealth, cracking down on shell companies and implementing the benami law, which provides for confiscation of assets held in the name of another person or under a fictitious name to avoid taxation.
