New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a five-nation visit today which will cover Afghanistan, Qatar, Switzerland, the US and Mexico. Modi will begin his trip with Afghanistan to inaugurate India-funded Salma Dam which has been constructed at a cost of about 1,400 crore. From Afghanistan, he will proceed to energy-rich Qatar and then to Switzerland where black money is likely to be on the agenda. In the United States, PM Modi will meet President Barack Obama and also address a joint meeting of the US Congress.

Mathura under police watch after clashes, uneasy calm prevails

Uneasy calm prevailed in areas around Jawahar Bagh in Uttar Pradesh a day after violent clashes between police and members of a sect claimed 24 lives as a large posse of police and paramilitary personnel kept strict vigil, forcing locals to stay indoors. PM Modi signs off on one-year vision for skill development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signed off on a one-year target for the Skill India Mission, which will lead to addition of 5,000 more Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) to India’s existing pool of over 13,000 such institutions, export trained manpower abroad and make skill training aspirational, among other things. In a review meeting with different stakeholders, including state governments, Central ministries and some industry representatives, on Thursday evening, Modi gave a roadmap for the sector so that it can scale up faster. Kerala, Tamil Nadu get new assembly speakers

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, member P. Sreeramakrishnan was on Friday elected as the speaker of the 14th Kerala assembly. Sreeramakrishnan (LDF), who represents Ponnani constituency, secured 92 votes against UDF’s candidate V.P. Sajeendran, who got 46 votes in the 140-member house.

The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (AIADMK) nominee P. Dhanapal was on Friday unanimously elected speaker of the 15th Tamil Nadu assembly, the first to be elected for a consecutive second term in the state’s legislative history even as chief minister J. Railway minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Union power minister Piyush Goyal and senior Congress leader and former finance minister P. Govt working towards two gender justice laws

The last two weeks have seen the women and child development (WCD) ministry propose two key laws aimed at redefining gender justice—the draft Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2016 and the draft National Policy for Women, 2016. Both the draft bills bring with them many firsts. While the bill on trafficking, released on 30 May, is the first to have covered the subject of trafficking for purposes other than sex work and provides victims with a legal right to rehabilitation, the draft National Policy for Women, released on 17 May, brings the focus on women’s reproductive rights, redistribution of gender roles and the recognition of the rights of single women for the first time.
