New Delhi: Demanding better salaries, more paid leaves and other social security benefits like provident fund and medical facilities, nearly 350-400 employees of DD News, the 24x7 state-owned news channel of public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, protested by wearing black badges around their arms.

Anchors of most shows on DD News wore black clothes to mark the protest. The “black badge" protest will continue for the next one week in case the demands are not met.

In separate letters sent to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, chief executive of Prasar Bharati and the director general of DD News, the employees have demanded an immediate hike in salaries, something that they complain hasn’t happened for the last three years.

The employees have also asked for medical leaves along with maternity and paternity leaves. Currently, the employees get 12 casual leaves and three national holidays and no other earned leave. They have demanded better HR policies regarding upgrading of designations as well.

DD News was launched in 2003 by converting DD Metro, Doordarshan’s general entertainment channel, into the country’s only 24x7 terrestrial and bilingual news channel. The channel telecasts over 17 hours of live news bulletins daily in Hindi and English everyday.
