The latest livestock census, released on Wednesday, records a decline in India’s livestock population by 3.33% between 2005 and 2012, led by falling numbers of sheep, goats and pigs.
However, India had over 80 million animals producing milk in 2012, an increase of 4.51%. At 35%, exotic and crossbred cattle recorded the most impressive growth during this period.
India’s poultry population too increased by over 12%. Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Assam were top performers, where livestock populations rose by over 10%.
