Foreign direct investment (FDI) led budget-related conversations on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter on 10 July, the day finance minister Arun Jaitley presented the Union budget in Parliament. In a study conducted by Nielsen Online, part of the global information and research firm Nielsen, besides FDI, conversation hinged on topics such as tax exemptions, start-ups and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Jaitley promised five more institutes like the AIIMS and promised funding to start-ups among the weaker sections of society in his budget speech. References to price rise took a back seat. “Acche din", the campaign slogan of the BJP, resonated more on social media after the elections than before it.

Nielsen Online used social media listening tools and specific keywords to analyse the buzz.
