Madurai: The Sethusamudhram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) would be a boon to the economic development of southern districts of Tamil Nadu, Chairman of National Biodiversity S Kannaiyan has said.
The SSCP had a huge potential and it met all the required ecological criteria, he said while speaking on “Awareness programme on biodiversity" organised by the private Yadava College here last night.
He said the youth should play a major role in protecting the marine biodiversity along the 8000 km coastal line of the country.
The country was reorienting its efforts to meet the future challenges of increased food production while ensuring conservation and sustainable utilisation.
Integrated crop farming and livestock production systems for generating additional income were receiving greater attention, he said.
