Hyderabad: Attacked Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi continued to remain in a critical condition on Sunday, a day after he was shot at and stabbed by his rivals in old city area of Hyderabad.

He continues to be on ventilator support and is undergoing dialysis as he is suffering from acute kidney failure, according to a health bulletin released by Care Hospitals where Owaisi is undergoing treatment. Doctors operated on his abdomen for the second time after an initial intra-abdominal surgery on Saturday.

Akbaruddin Owaisi is the younger brother of MIM party president Asaduddin Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.

The 38-year-old MIM floor leader in the State Assembly was attacked with knives and pistols by a rival group when he was touring his constituency on Saturday. One member of the attacking party was killed while two others were hospitalised.

According to the health bulletin, Owaisi suffered multiple injuries on his left upper limb, left kidney, upper portion of his large intestine and urinary bladder. His health condition will be monitored closely over the next 48 hours, doctors said.

Meanwhile, tense atmosphere prevailed for the second consecutive day in old city area of the city, a MIM bastion, where heavy police contingents were deployed. With frenzied supporters swarming the hospital where Owaisi was undergoing treatment, police were stationed outside in large numbers.

Several politicians including Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, State home minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, YSR Congress leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy, and others called on the Owaisis at the hospital.
