Reliance Industries (RIL) Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani and his younger brother Anil remained entrenched among India’s top three newsmakers last month with rapid moves to consolidate and expand their businesses after reaching a peace agreement in May. RIL agreed to purchase Infotel Broadband Services Pvt. Ltd, re-entering the telecom business after the brothers scrapped a non-compete agreement. Reliance Communications Ltd, the flagship of the Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-Adag), won board approval to sell a 26% stake in itself and merged its telecom towers business with GTL Infrastructure Ltd. Mukesh Ambani was the second most cited voice in global media, behind only finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, with Anil Ambani at third place in Mint’s 20-member group of influencers last month. Anil Ambani was the second most cited Indian in local media, with his elder brother at third place.
The Mint Influencers Index is a monthly objective measure based on media analysis by Dow Jones Insight, which tracks these leaders, looking at the volume of media citings for each of them as a proxy for their rising or waning influence. The assumption is that visibility and share of voice is good for them and their companies. In the case of global media, the index is collectively a surrogate for the growing or waning interest in India.
