New Delhi: The Government on 9 August allowed minor changes in the Rs698-crore special package for livestock and fisheries in 31 suicide-prone districts in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala, seeking its effective implementation.

The package, announced last year, is to be implemented over a period of three years from 2006-07 and consists a budgetary support of Rs510.79 crore and credit component of Rs187.21 crore.

“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval to modifications to the special package for livestock and fisheries in the 31 identified suicide-prone districts suggested by the beneficiary states," Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after the CCEA meeting here.

These modifications will lead to effective implementation of the package, he added.

In Andhra Pradesh, as per the changes, the average estimated cost for estrus synchronisation envisaged in the component relating to the breeding services would be Rs650 per animal against an amount of Rs500 per animal provided in the special package, the minister said.

The additional amount required would be met from the fund made available for artificial insemination, which requires only 300 per animal against an amount of 450 provided for the same.

Overall, there is no additional financial implication, a release issued after the meeting said.

The CCEA also granted permission for establishing two fodder block making units at a cost of Rs85 lakh as against the original plan of setting up 10 fodder block making units, involving a financial outlay of Rs4.26 crore over three years approved for Andhra Pradesh.
