New Delhi: The Confederation of Indian Industry signed and MoU with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) to organize the “Know India Programme" (KIP), the objective being to introduce the overseas Indian youth to India’s culture, heritage, history, economy and development.

Focus of the tie-up

* Provide youth more exposure to latest developments in India’s economic and industrial scenario.

* Organize KIPs in partnership with CII and its youth wing, Young Indians; maintain a website for the purpose involving a network of overseas Indian youth.

*176 candidates from 39 countries have confirmed participation for the KIP. They will pay for one way travel to India and the balance cost will be borne by the Ministry. KIPs are done in partnership with a State Government who hosts the participants in coordination with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan. Participants will get an opportunity to understand various facets of rural India.

* Mini Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) will be organized in New York on 23September 2007. Singapore has also approached the Ministry to organize a mini PBD with a focus on PIOs.

* Ministry is organizing the KIP in coordination with CII, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and State Ministry of Goa with a budget of 1 crore. MOIA is planning to hold three more KIPs in the current year.

Structure and scope of KIP

Designed to create awareness about the transformation taking place in India and the country’s progress from just a destination for culture, heritage and art to an emerging powerhouse in the global economic system. Participants also meet senior dignitaries in India including the President and Prime Minister.

KIP is a 2-3 week comprehensive orientation programme organized by the Ministry, 2-3 times a year including one that coincides with the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held every year around January 9. Participants comprise overseas Indians in the age group of 20-28 years, who have distinguished themselves in any field and have abiding interest in India and links with India through parentage.

KIP is in its 7th year and this is the first time that an industry association has been associated with MOIA for its Internship Programme for Diaspora Youth.
