New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Sunday agreed to step down after a meeting with Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, leader Jyoti Basu in Kolkata. Though both the leaders refused to speak to the media after the meeting, top CPM leaders confirmed Chatterjee had agreed to resign. Chatterjee wasn’t willing to quit, said top Left leaders on condition of anonymity. “Somnathbabu was very reluctant. He insisted that a lot of work was yet to be done,” said a CPM leader. “But Jyotibabu explained he didn’t have a choice after his party withdrew support,” he added. Later in the day, external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee also met Basu at his home in Kolkata.
