Political updates: PM Narendra Modi to address public meeting in Allahabad

New Delhi: Preparing for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is holding a two-day national executive meeting in Allahabad to plan for the crucial year ahead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the election campaign in the state by addressing a public meeting in Allahabad after the executive meeting. This will also be attended by all the senior leaders of the party.

On Monday, the Bombay High Court, which has been hearing the case filed by the producers of Udta Punjab against a CBFC demand, is also likely to give an order.

2017 is year of challenges: Amit Shah

BJP president Amit Shah declared 2017 as the year of challenges—the year the party will have to contest assembly polls in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, where it is not necessarily the front-runner. On the first day of the two-day national executive of the BJP in Allahabad, he outlined the priorities of the party. In his address, the BJP president pointed out that while the Congress party was weakening in every state, the BJP should grow and enhance its presence because of its ideological commitment and leadership. Congress puts Ghulam Nabi Azad in charge of UP, Kamal Nath to oversee Punjab

The Congress party has appointed veterans Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kamal Nath as general secretaries in charge of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, respectively, ahead of next year’s assembly elections in the two states. The move comes at a time when the Congress has faced electoral setbacks in every state election—barring Bihar, where it is a junior partner in the ruling alliance—in the past two years. Read more

In the build-up to the elections to the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), due in early 2017, the relations between alliance partners BJP and Shiv Sena are hitting new lows. Shiv Sena member of Parliament Sanjay Raut last week compared the BJP-led rule at the Centre and in Maharashtra with that of the Nizam of Hyderabad in parts of India before Independence, suggesting that the Narendra Modi-led government is arbitrary, extravagant and person-centric. Punjab govt not contemplating any ban on ‘Udta Punjab’: Akali Dal

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday said the Punjab government was not contemplating any ban on Shahid Kapoor-starrer Udta Punjab, which is caught in a censorship row, and alleged Aam Aadmi Party’s “hand" in the making of the film to defame the state. NSG membership: India likely to woo China at Tashkent

Having overhauled the century-old bankruptcy laws for companies, the government will now bring a new insolvency law for banks and financial institutions to vest with depositors the first right over assets of a defunct entity. In an interview to PTI, minister for state for finance Jayant Sinha said the new legislation that is in the process of being drafted will help in quick winding up of stressed banks, NBFCs (non-banking financial companies) and MFIs (microfinance institutions), while safeguarding the interest of small savers.
