BSP candidate wants to cash in on his celibacy
BSP candidate S. George from New Delhi wants electors to vote for him as he has taken a vow to remain celibate and single
You may have heard opposition parties asking people to vote against inflation and corruption and the ruling party trying to remind people about the rights it has entitled you to in the past 10 years.
You also have candidates seeking votes in the name of religion and caste; if a candidate is a professional, he or she expects professional colleagues to vote for him or her.
Some candidates devise novel ways of campaigning. In Mumbai, an independent candidate scaled buildings like the comic book hero Spiderman to impress voters. Celebrities try to influence voters with their glamour and the sense of familiarity they inspire.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate in the New Delhi constituency, S. George, wants electors to vote for him for a special reason—he has taken a vow to remain celibate and single.
“I am a monk in the monastery and taken a vow to be celibate and remain single," he said in an advertisement in The Hindustan Times on Wednesday. “Nominee for all my movable and immovable property is government of India. Can other politician emulate this for the cause of the nation? This time, rise above party line."
“I am sure you are not prejudiced and biased. One day history will end and you will be remembered as one who believed in fairness and gave a chance to every party. Vote this time for justice for every Indian, Equality for every human being and unity for all Indians which makes a strong India," George said.
